Admissions to Public Sector Medical and Dental Institutions of the Punjab are regulated by the Government through an Admission Board comprising Vice Chancellors and Principals of all public sector Medical & Dental Institutions of the Punjab. Currently, the Vice Chancellor, University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, is the Chairman Admission Board. The Admission Board submits its recommendations with regards to the admissions process on yearly basis to the Government of the Punjab which after the approval of Chief Minister Punjab, become the Admission Policy for that session. The admissions are carried out strictly in accordance with this Admission Policy which is reflected in the Prospectus.
Currently, the University of Health Sciences Lahore (www.uhs.edu.pk) is responsible for conducting the Admission Test (MDCAT) and finalizing the selection of candidates for MBBS and BDS in Public Sector Medical and Dental Institutions respectively.
Admissions to the public sector medical/dental colleges Institutions is strictly merit-based, with no discretion, whatsoever, vested in any authority.
The Admission Process starts every year with an advertisement in the major newspapers of the country. It usually appears on the Last Sunday of June or First Sunday of July. The advertisement is also uploaded on UHS website. It contains details about the application procedure and schedule of admissions.
Admission Test (MDCAT) :
The Medical & Dental Colleges‟ Admission Test is a standardized admission test which is mandatory for admission to MBBS and BDS programme in all public and private sector medical and dental institutions (except otherwise provided in the regulations) according to the regulations of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC). It is a two and a half hour (150 minutes) paper based test that is offered once a year. The test is administered by the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, on behalf of the Government of the Punjab. UHS is responsible for producing and marking the test, and also facilitating an extensive province-wise centre network at which the candidates can sit the test.
It is mandatory for candidates having domicile of any district of Punjab to appear in this Admission Test for admission against Open Merit, Disabled, Under-Developed Districts and Reciprocal Seats in Public Sector Colleges and for Local Seats in Private Sector Colleges of the Province.
The candidates desirous for admission against Overseas/Foreign seats in Public as well as Private Sector Medical and Dental Institutions can either appear in the Admission Test or in lieu of Admission Test they can present their SAT II scores (which must not be less than 550/800 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics/Mathematics each) or American MCAT scores (which must not be less than 24 in old scoring system and 498 in new scoring system in aggregate (43 or above percentile)). The validity period for SAT II/MCAT scores is 02 years. This means that scores declared before 1st October 2015 shall not be acceptable for admissions for the session 2017-18. It is also to be noted that these scores are a pre-requisite for admissions. The results declared after the last date of submission of Admission Forms for Public sector Medical/Dental Institutions shall not be acceptable.
The merit is worked out as per the regulations of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC), and is based on the aggregate percentage of the candidates worked out by adding the marks in the following ratio:
Matriculation (SSC or Equivalent) – 10%
HSSC/F.Sc (Premedical or Equivalent) – 40%
Admission Test/SAT II/American MCAT – 50%
