LUMS Student found Dead in University Hostel Room

Courtesy : Dawn.com LAHORE: A student of a private university in Defence was found dead in his hostel room on Monday.

Police said Shahmir Asif, 21, a third-year student of BSc Honours, hailed from Karachi and had been living in the university hostel for the last two years. On Monday evening, they said, his roommate had found him unconscious on the bed and took him to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

A source said Shahmir was last seen on the campus this past Saturday evening when he was leaving for somewhere.

`He might have come back to the university late Saturday night and went to sleep in his room, where he was found unconscious by his roommate Rohan on Monday evening.` Rohan, said the source, had left for his home in Islamabad on Friday night and returned on Monday evening. Rohan unlocked the room door and on finding Shahmir unresponsive, alerted the university administration and also called in police, he said.

After completing legal formalities and postmortem, police handed over the body to the family who took it to Karachi for burial.

Shahmir`s father Asif told Dawn they did not want to pursue the case. The family, he said, was waiting for the postmortem report.

A statement issued by the LUMS administration states: `Shahmir was found unresponsive on the bed in his room on Dec 12… he was taken to a hospital where doctors pronounced that he had expire d earlier in the day.

A varsity spokesperson told Dawn the matter was being investigated.

The police team examined the CCTV footage of the hostel. The student was seen leaving and later entering the hostel on Saturday evening, said a police officer.
