Scope of BS-Medical Lab Sciences (BS-MLS) in Pakistan

BS-Medical Lab Sciences (BS-MLS)

About the Program

Modern medicine owes its existence to accurate diagnosis – and this in turn is dependent upon highly specialized technical equipment. Medical Laboratory Scientists [MLS] are highly trained professionals who work with state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory machines that help the Physicians in reaching an accurate diagnosis – often on real-time basis. Their training and expertise assigns them a critical, often life-saving role in healthcare settings.

MLS work as healthcare detectives – uncovering and providing critical patient information from laboratory analyses. They are also trained to monitor testing quality and run quality assurance tests in modern diagnostic laboratories to keep the lab equipment performing accurately at all tims. MLS are trained to use sophisticated and expensive biomedical instruments and technology, and use computers, and other automated equipment to perform the tests. A certain level of manual dexterity is also required of them to perform laboratory testing on all types of human samples.

Role of Medical Lab Scientists in Modern Healthcare

The accurate laboratory data that they generate is needed to aid in detecting malicious diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, infectious mononucleosis, and identification of bacteria or viruses that cause infections, as well as in detecting drugs of abuse. Additionally, they not only perform laboratory procedures including very sophisticated analyses, but also evaluate and interpret the data and results. Additionally, they may also be required to provide expert opinion on complex lab data, consult, conduct research and develop new test methods.

Who Should Study?

Students who are interested in life sciences, are technically oriented, like working in individual capacity as well as part of larger team and those who also wish to make a difference in people’s life should adopt this profession.

Course and Semester Details

The BS Medical Laboratory Sciences is a 4-year under graduate professional degree program approved by the Board of Advanced Studies and endorsed by HEC, equivalent to 16 years of education. A fair amount of course work is completed by carrying out hands-on training on real patients in the University Clinical Skills Center and at laboratories and clinical department of the hospitals and clinics that are part of the University’s network.
